about

"Sometimes it seems that the perfect realisation of one's creative ideas in black metal is writing everything alone (like you-know-who) or with another dude (like, for example, the Smartass Fenriz, even though he's formally just a drummer). "Land of fearless birds" ("Край непуганых птиц") is a concept EP from a one-man project, Sivyj Yar, which is dedicated to describing" the lonely and tormented path of a soul that has quit its body. The title track tells of the path of the author (who is very much alive and active, all hail the Native Gods), a true-blue Pagan - and therefore a devotee of native wildlife and a fan of selectedcultural elements from his native land and peoples. For example, on the last Sivyi Yar full-length, Vladimir mixes in poetry by Esenin and Tyutchev with his own lyrics, and an autumnal still-life by the Russian artist Myasoedov provides the cover art. The lyrics are worthy of special praise - they're certainly good and completely devoid of the clumsiness inherent in some authors who gracelesslyoveruse pseudo-Slavic phrase-mongering. In the aforementioned title song (which iswell constructed and recorded/mixed very well), ghastly classic string overtonesscratch their way through the main monumental guitar riff, and the vocals are Nazgul-like - shrieky, sinister. The music conjures up pleasant associations - from old (or not-most-recent) Ulver to Alcest and other smart musicians who are able to mix their rage with romantic melodies in perfect proportion. The title track is crowned with a field recording of an ancient Russian ritual song which was used to summon the proper path for a dead man's soul - an anthropological find in a imponderable ambient frame. In total - this album is a work of intimate, rare beauty!"

I'm against this war.

Sivyj Yar (an ancient deity of Slavs), is a black metal band from Vyritsa, Russia formed in 2006. The author and the only member of the project is Vladimir. The lyrical part of Sivyj Yar is based on Slavonic mythology and poetry. These are the songs about those who have gone into oblivion, the memories of whom has been lost. ... more
